Freight Train Update
The East Summit Association has been working closely with the Coalition to Stop the Freight Train since 2003. As of June 2010, Union County has been forced to suspend it's plans due to lack of funding. Our efforts to prevent plans by Union County to activate a Freight rail line through our community will continue as long as needed.
The ESA has long maintained that there is no viable economic plan for a fright line through the mostly residential neighborhoods in Union County. There is strong evidence to suggest that the true motivation for this line was to haul New York City trash from Staten Island to Pennsylvania.
Our recommendation is to convert the long abandoned railroad right of way into a bike trail that could connect several existing parks.
